Mrs. Jenny Dixon
2nd Grade
Hello, my name is Jenny Dixon. I am blessed to be the second-grade teacher at St. Paul Catholic School. I have been teaching for over 25 years. Throughout my teaching career, I have taught preschool, kindergarten, second, third, fourth, and seventh grade. I hold a Bachelor of Science Degree in Elementary Education with a major in Language Arts and a minor in Science. I also obtained a Masters Degree in Reading Literacy Specialization K-12 and I have an advanced catechist formation certificate. I am married to my talented husband Jason and we have 2 beautiful children that God has gifted us with. I love God and I am extremely fortunate to be able to teach where I can model and grow in my faith as well as teach your child about the great love of our Lord Jesus Christ! I am a lifelong learner, I have a great love for children, and a passion to teach. God has led me to this fulfilling position. I believe that your child’s first school experiences are the foundations for them to become lifelong learners as well. I look forward to getting to know your beautiful children, guiding them, and helping them grow to their greatest potential. Within our classroom it is my goal for your child to grow in a deeper relationship with God. I will also be helping enrich their education by helping them grow socially, emotionally, and academically. They will become active and independent learners while I help them set high goals and expectations for themselves. They will be exploring, learning, sharing, and creating while feeling safe and successful. I want to open the mind and heart of each child and allow them to see the talents God has given them. I am guiding them with the help of the Lord, to become disciples of Christ. I look forward to meeting your beautiful children and working with them to make it a very magical school year!
5 FINGER TEST TO HELP YOUR CHILD FIND A JUST RIGHT BOOK
The five-finger test is a quick 4-step method where a reader counts unknown words on a single page to see if a book matches their reading level.
Steps for the Five-Finger Test
- Choose a book: Pick a book that catches your interest or looks fun to read.
- Open to the middle: Turn to any full page of text near the middle of the book. Try to pick a page with lots of words and few pictures.
- Start reading: Read the page out loud or in a quiet whisper so you can hear words you stumble on.
- Count unknown words: Hold up one finger every time you come across a word you do not know, cannot pronounce, or do not understand. (Skip proper nouns like character or place names). [1, 2, 3, 4]
Understanding Your Finger Count
- 0 to 1 finger: The book is likely too easy and won't help you grow as much as a reader.
- 2 to 3 fingers: The book is just right—the sweet spot for independent reading that challenges you without causing frustration.
- 4 fingers: The book is challenging, but it is worth a try if the topic really excites you.
- 5 fingers: The book is likely too hard to read alone and is better saved for later or read together with a buddy. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]
